"Motor oil is a construction material with the following tasks:

Lubrication, cooling, power transfer, protection from wear and tear, reduction of friction, sealing, protection from rust, cleaning of the motor and neutralisation of fuel acidity.

This is, first and foremost, an analytical process which permits initial conclusions to be drawn as to the condition of the motor, without devoting too much time to laboratory techniques.

This process is based on the principle of chromatography (colour writing). In chemistry, this is a process which allows the separation of a mixture of matter by variable distribution of its individual components between a stationary and a mobile phase.

 This principle was first described by the Russian botanist Michail Semjonovich Tswett. In chemical analysis, this process is used to separate mixed matter in the most consistent way, to enable identification or quantitative classification.

This process for motor analysis was developed further, and a patent was applied for by Mr Gert Horstmeyer of MOTORcheckUP Ltd.

While the engine is at operating temperature, a drop of oil is extracted and deposited onto the chromatographic paper. After letting it soak in for 2-15 minutes (depending on the condition of the oil) and a development time of 1.5 to 8 hours, you can evaluate the test field with the use of the template and the colour tables.

Based on the test results, you will be able to find evidence of exhaust particles, dirt, metal abrasion, water content and percentage of fuel content. This will allow you to reach conclusions as to the condition or configuration of your engine.

Should you require a more detailed and quantitatively correct result, a laboratory analysis is recommended."
